Picture this...the music has started, the congregation have been asked to stand, the groom is in position at the end of the aisle and you are all eagerly awaiting the first peek at the Bride. But first, in walks a shy little cutie in a beautiful dress tossing petals as she goes. She looks adorable and is the perfect first glimpse of the bridal party …
Whether your flower girl is a daughter, niece, cousin, sister or family friend, wearing the perfect dress will not only bring an added ‘awww’ factor to your wedding day but will also make her feel special and confident and more likely to smile adorably for the cameras on the big day!
So, what are the top things to consider when choosing the perfect flower girl dress?
- The Season
This may determine sleeve length, footwear and choice of extra layers. Whilst open toe sandals are an option for summer weddings, shoes tend to be the most popular choice. Rainbow club cushioned shoes are extremely light and comfortable, however these are finished in satin, so patent styles would be more appropriate for out of the Summer season. Boleros, shrugs and cardigans are considerations for the cooler months. Lightweight organza and cotton boleros are great for cooler weather and fur shrugs look fabulous for winter weddings. Fine sheer tights are always a good option and more popular with older girls, whereas cute frilly socks look gorgeous on little ones.
- Growth spurts
If in doubt, go up a size. You’ll want to start looking at flower girl dresses well in advance of the wedding to allow for ordering items in if needed, especially if you’re wanting multiple sizes.
- Trying on
It’s in everyone's best interests that the flower girl feels happy and comfortable in her dress otherwise it might get torn off before the wedding has even started! Trying on for size is important but also trying on for comfort and to ensure your flower girl likes it and feel good in it, is also important.
- Fabric
Of course you want the fabric to fit in with the style of your wedding, whether it’s light, simple and floaty or something a little more formal and detailed. The most popular fabric chosen by manufacturers is quality polyester, it’s comfortable, light, cool and perfect for the inner lining. Fabric for the outer body of the dress vary widely depending on style and manufacturer. Polyester, soft combed cotton, organza (nylon), satin, silk and taffeta are amongst the most popular fabrics used. These fabrics are then often beautifully embroidered and embellished with rhinestones, pearls, sequins, jewels, lace and ribbon.
- Length
Avoid a very long gown, you don’t want any trips or falls whilst walking down the aisle. Ballerina or tea length are perfect to avoid this and of course to show off their gorgeous shoes.
- Before the ceremony
It may seem obvious but once the dress is on, limit food and drink to water and dry, colourless snacks like cheese and crackers. You may want to gift your flower girl with a new game to play to entertain her whilst the bridal party finish getting ready.
Happy Wedding Day and Congratulations!
